Hometown Of Andy Griffith

Posted on March 01, 2009 by: eriecoast

Closest City: Mount Airy
State: North Carolina
Country: United States

If you grew up watching the Andy Griffith show on TV like I did, then this is the place to see.

Located in the Yadkin Valley wine region!
NC Exit Parkway at Milepost 199.5, Hwy 52 South. 12 miles south of Fancy Gap, VA.

We where at our Aunt Ellen’s house in Taylorsville, NC visiting on vacation, and my daughter Katie and her boyfriend Steve, wanted to do some site seeing. They wanted to see Andy Griffith’s hometown, Mount Airy, NC. the inspiration for the town of Mayberry.

We first arrived at the Mayberry Courthouse, it was interesting to see how close the TV Show, and this town really looked alike. We had fun looking at all the antique ways of how they had to do things back then. We then walked over to Wally’s Service Station, and looked at more memorabilia and antiques. We got a map of the town, so we could find all the attractions. You can take the Squad Car Tour from here, and they will show you around town, the tour is about a half hour long. But we decided not to, and headed into town with our trusty map.
When we got into town we walked past Floyd's City Barber Shop and the "Wall of Fame" a collection of over 20,000 pictures.
We got to see Otis the town drunk, “he likes to tell jokes”.
They have so many shops with all kinds of memorabilia and antiques, we felt like kids in a candy store.
Did I say Candy! We had to buy some candy from Opie’s Candy Store too, and a ice cream, yummy.

Katie and Steve took off on there own, and got to see the Old City Jail, looks kind of spooky.

We drove by Andy Griffith Homeplace, before we headed back. You can stay in the home where he lived during his adolescence until he graduated high school. His parents bought the house for $600 on Oct. 31, 1935. They sold the house on May 31, 1966, for $6,000. The house contains antiques and is decorated 1930s-1940s style. Griffith memorabilia and stories can also be found at every turn.

We had a good time on our trip, the people are very friendly, and I wish we would have had more time, because there is a lot more to see and do, but a rain storm kept us in one shop for about an hour.

Great pictures. That brings back memories for me too and makes me want to watch some episodes to see 'ol Barney Fife bumbling around. Wasn't that Ron Howard's first show appearance (Opie).

Good choices for your links. I like the "visit mayberry" link because it talks about the entire area of Surry County, NC (which Mount Airy, ie. Mayberry is located). Check out the "Top 15 Reasons to Visit" link on the left side.
