Booth Lake (Yosemite)

Posted on September 19, 2008 by: Traveler

  • The High Sierra Loop passes right by Booth Lake. It will either be just before arriving at Tuolumne Pass near Vogelsang HSC (left side) or just past the Vogelsang junction while enroute to other backcountry locations like Emerick Lake or Merced Lake HSC (
  • Down at the edge of Booth Lake, this picture was taken looking back toward the trail (not necessarily identifiable, but it's in that direction)
  • Southern edge of Booth Lake. There is a small crossing just to the left and the campsites will be up and over the rock outcrops to the top left side of this picture.
  • Small log crossing mentioned in previous pic. Campsites are behind.
  • The lake will be partially obscured as you travel along the rock outcrop to the left (west) side.
  • Look for designated fire rings and try not to establish (another) campsite.
  • From the (already designated) camping areas, the water's edge is just up ahead. It is rocky up ahead and good for filtering (less sediment).
  • Looking north over Booth Lake with hiker Jeff Jensen at the rocky shore.
  • Trail junction at Tuolumne Pass. Vogelsang HSC to the left, Booth Lake and beyond straight ahead.
  • Booth Lake seen from the trail to either Tuolumne Pass (behind) or Emerick Lake (ahead).

DIRECTIONS: From California 395 near the city of Lee Vining, take Highway 120 up to Tioga Pass and into Yosemite National Park. Park at the Tuolumne Ranger Station. Backcountry permits can also be picked up a this location, but they are on a first-come basis (departing trailhead and ending destination play the biggest factor) to limit trail use.

From Yosemite Valley, connect to Highway 120 (right fork leading up) at the western side of the valley. NOTE: If driving up Highway 140 from the city of Merced (southwest entrance), at the junction with Highway 120 you would be making a left turn at the fork. At the next junction of the 120, take the east route (right) heading toward Tuolumne Meadow. Park at the Tuolumne Ranger Station.

From the Western (Highway 120) entrance into Yosemite, continue all the way east to Tuolumne Meadow and park at the Ranger Station.

Parkiing is also available near Lembert Dome along the road leading to the horse stables. This will lengthen the walk by less than a half mile.

    Traveler Said...
The mosquito population in early summer is absolutely MADDENING!!! On a recent trip to Booth Lake (June 08') along the High Sierra Loop, this is where they started attacking en masse.
