Grand Teton National Park (Winter)

Posted on November 19, 2008 by: Traveler

Best Time To Visit: For same results-Winter
Closest City: Jackson
State: 64
Country: 209

DIRECTIONS: From the city of Jackson, WY: take Highway 89 due north out of town. The large open area with all the ungulates is the National Elk Refuge where, on average, 7,500 members of the largest migrating elk herd travel from the upper reaches of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem safe winter haven. Just past the Elk Refuge, Highway 89 rises up a small incline... and then the Teton Crest will come into view and the South entrance will be up ahead. It's that easy.

If traveling from neighboring Idaho (say, you flew into the airport at Idaho Falls) then make your way over to the Teton Valley of Idaho (not to be confused with the Teton Valley of Wyoming which, naturally, Grand Teton National Park is a part of) and take Highway 22 up and over Teton Pass to Wilson, WY. Continue on through the outskirts of Jackson and at the central park (the famous one with the elk antler arches) and turn left (north) onto Highway 89. See previous directions.

From Yellowstone National Park: Exit out of Yellowstone Park from the south entrance and continue driving due south along the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway (Highway 89). Enter Grand Teton National Park through the norht entrance. Again, it's that easy but keep in mind that snow (lots of it) closes this road at Flagg Ranch Resort from roughly November through April. Call (888)WYOROAD (996-7623) for current road conditions.

From the east: Take Highway 26 from Dubois, WY, and enter Grand Teton Park through the Moran Entrance station.

Location Notes:

  •

    psybescopic Said...
Those poetic signs are classic! How far apart are they?

  •

    Traveler Said...
The signs are just past the main park entrance and are approximately 100 feet apart... just far enough to read when speeding!
