Mirror Lake (Yosemite)

Posted on October 13, 2008 by: Traveler

  • A small fox hurries across the bridge crossing over Tenaya Creek.
  • There was a small sapling that took root in the root ball of the fallen giant.
  • It's hard to make out, but this is a closer pic of the small sapling that had taken root in the larger mass of the fallen trees root ball.

Best Time To Visit: Winter and late Spring
Closest City: Fish Camp
State: 7
Country: 208

DIRECTIONS: Yosemite National Park. Hop on the free shuttle at any shuttle-stop in Yosemite Valley and take it to the Happy Isle shuttle-stop.

If you choose to take your own vehicle, park at the backpackers parking lot. To reach this lot, you will drive along the Valley road and pass Curry Village at the eastern side of Yosemite Valley. Make a right turn at the junction and you will see the dirt entrance of the large parking lot off to the right. It is directly across from the Lower Pines Campground. Walk along the trail that parallels the road to the Happy Isle shuttle-stop. This will increase the hiking distance by about 1/2 mile each way. Up ahead will be a large stone bridge crossing over the Merced River. On the opposite side, turn left and parallel the Merced River from the right side. This will also be a road which is only open to pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles displaying a wheelchair emblem placard. At the next road junction, follow the signs pointing to Mirror Lake on the right side. Pretty soon, the road crosses one more bridge over Tenaya Creek as it winds its last couple lazy turns before feeding into the Mighty Merced. Continue farther up this road and watch as Half Dome rises higher and higher off to the right.
